Why the Brain Rejects Truth…

Have you ever shared something you believed was clearly true — only to find that the other person simply could not see it?

Not that they disagreed. Not that they needed more information.

They simply could not hear it.

This experience is common in everyday life, but it becomes especially noticeable in matters of faith, identity, and belief. Some truths seem obvious to one person, yet completely invisible to another.

Interestingly, both neuroscience and Scripture offer insight into why this happens.

The Brain Filters Reality

One of the most fascinating discoveries in neuroscience is that the human brain does not process all the information around us.

It filters it.

Every second, your brain receives millions of pieces of sensory data: sounds, images, words, emotions, and environmental signals. Processing everything would overwhelm the brain, so it relies on a filtering system to decide what deserves attention.

One of the brain’s key filtering systems is known as the Reticular Activating System (RAS).

The RAS acts like a gatekeeper. It determines which information reaches your conscious awareness and which information gets ignored.

And here is the crucial point:

The RAS prioritises information that aligns with what you already believe.

If something fits your current worldview, the brain allows it through. If something challenges your established beliefs, the brain often filters it out.

This is why two people can hear the exact same message and walk away with completely different interpretations.

Their brains were not processing the same information.

Why the Brain Protects Existing Beliefs

From a neurological standpoint, belief systems create stability. They provide structure for how we interpret the world.

When information threatens those structures, the brain experiences something called cognitive dissonance – a state of internal discomfort caused by conflicting ideas.

To protect stability, the brain often resolves this tension by rejecting the new information rather than restructuring existing beliefs.

In other words, sometimes people do not reject truth because they are stubborn. They reject it because their brain is protecting the worldview it has already built.

The Biblical Description of the Same Reality

Long before neuroscience explored these mechanisms, Scripture described something remarkably similar.

2 Corinthians 4: 3-4 “But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded…”

Paul describes a veil over the mind that prevents people from seeing the light of the gospel.

Jesus also spoke about this phenomenon when explaining why some people could not understand His teachings.

Matthew 13:13 “Seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.”

These passages describe a reality where truth is present, yet perception is blocked. Not because the message is unclear, but because the ability to perceive it is restricted.

Strongholds in the Mind

Scripture also speaks about mental frameworks that shape how people interpret truth.

2 Corinthians 10:5 “Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”

The word “arguments” refers to deeply rooted patterns of thinking and belief structures that influence how people interpret reality.

In modern language, these might be described as mental frameworks or cognitive structures. When these structures are built on inaccurate foundations, they can prevent people from recognising truth even when it is clearly presented.

The Role of Revelation

If belief systems shape perception, then transformation requires more than information.

It requires revelation.

Information adds knowledge, and revelation changes perception.

When someone experiences genuine insight, the brain begins forming new neural pathways. The old mental structures that once filtered truth out can be replaced with new frameworks that allow truth to be recognised.

This is why Scripture emphasises the renewal of the mind.

Romans 12:2 “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Transformation begins when the way we see reality changes. Learn exactly how to build a revelation here.

Why Understanding the Mind Matters

Understanding how the brain processes belief helps explain why conversations about truth can be so complex. People are not simply processing information; they are interpreting it through layers of:

  • past experiences
  • emotional associations
  • cultural frameworks
  • personal identity.

Until those internal frameworks shift, truth may remain invisible. But when perception changes, everything changes. What was once hidden suddenly becomes obvious.

The veil lifts.

The Moment Everything Becomes Clear

Truth is not always rejected because it lacks evidence. Sometimes truth is missed because the mind has not yet learned to see it.

But Scripture reveals that there is a moment when perception changes, when what was once hidden suddenly becomes clear.

2 Corinthians 3:16 “Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.”

The veil that once limited understanding is removed, and suddenly the mind begins to perceive what was always present.

It is the moment when truth moves from being something we merely hear to something we finally see. And when that happens, the mind begins to renew, perception change, and a person starts to see reality differently.

This is why spiritual transformation is not merely about gathering more information.

It is about the unveiling of truth.

Because when the veil lifts and revelation comes, the mind begins to align with what God has already spoken, and the person who once could not see suddenly realises that the truth had been there all along.

One Response

  1. It is absolutely true. The brain filters experiences and unfortunately it caused almost a dilemma in my life during the last six months. If you were born into incorrect parents you wont notice red flags when you meet people immediately. But when you do it is this FIGHT between that which feels safe, and that which you know by now is truth because it is impossible to not receive revelation. Is the “pull” between the body and the soul or what exactly ? Could it be a double mindedness? There is also a subconscious awareness i noticed to automatically accept the unacceptable as acceptable for a period of hours, because you grew up with a personality who should have had a correct authority for proper spiritual covering and raising you with healthy principles, , until your brain/spirit gives you the revelation again that no, it is not acceptable. I realise we should always overcome here on earth, but respectfully I wonder if it is true that God chose your parents and you should overcome whatever? Is my DNA i was born with the DNA God chose for me? Only since I chose Encounter as my home I started to see the difference between chaff and good.
